The Velodyne F-1000 is a classic compact powered subwoofer from the era when Velodyne established its reputation for combining relatively small enclosures with unusually deep, controlled bass. Part of Velodyne’s Servo F-Series, the F-1000 uses a 10-inch long-throw driver, an 80-watt RMS Class A/B amplifier and Velodyne’s servo-control technology. The result is a subwoofer that, despite its modest amplifier rating and roughly 14¼-inch cube cabinet, was engineered to produce bass considerably deeper and cleaner than its physical size would suggest. Velodyne specified an impressive 20Hz–85Hz ±3dB frequency response.

The F-1000’s principal technology is its servo-controlled driver system. Rather than simply applying amplifier power to the woofer, Velodyne’s design monitors cone movement and uses feedback to help correct unwanted motion. This approach was a major part of the company’s identity during the period and allowed its engineers to pursue deep bass while keeping distortion under control. The F-Series manual specifically describes Velodyne’s application of motional feedback as a way of extracting unusually high performance from a substantial woofer.

The 10-inch driver features a resin/fiber cone, a 2⅜-inch voice coil and 56-ounce magnet structure. It provides ½ inch of linear travel, a substantial amount for a driver of this type. Velodyne rated distortion at less than 1 percent at 25Hz and 104dB, an indication of the company’s emphasis on maintaining control at high output levels.

The built-in amplifier produces 80 watts RMS, using a Class A/B output stage. Although today’s subwoofer specifications frequently advertise several hundred watts or more, the F-1000’s servo system and efficient driver design allow its relatively modest amplifier to achieve meaningful low-frequency output. Its active low-pass crossover is adjustable from 40Hz to 100Hz, while the system provides an 85Hz high-pass function with a 6dB-per-octave slope.

The F-1000 has also earned a loyal following among vintage-audio enthusiasts. One owner measuring the subwoofer reported that it appeared to remain essentially flat into the low-20Hz region, despite its small enclosure and 80-watt amplifier. In an enthusiast discussion from the 1990s, one listener called the F-1000’s bass “the tightest bass I’ve heard in its class,” although another participant in the same discussion preferred other designs. These conflicting impressions illustrate that integration, room acoustics and system matching can have a significant effect on the subjective performance of a subwoofer.

Physically, the F-1000 is a straightforward, relatively understated component. Its cabinet is approximately 14¼ inches on each side and weighs about 44 pounds. The black vinyl woodgrain enclosure and granite-look vinyl base give it the appearance of a conventional vintage hi-fi component rather than today’s furniture-oriented subwoofers.

For music systems in particular, the F-1000 remains an interesting example of engineering efficiency rather than brute-force amplification. Its combination of servo control, long excursion, compact dimensions and genuinely deep bass made it an influential Velodyne design. While modern subwoofers can offer considerably more amplifier power and sophisticated DSP, the F-1000 demonstrates why Velodyne developed such a strong reputation for accurate low-frequency reproduction.
