Description

The Thiel CS‑2 Loudspeaker is a classic American floor-standing loudspeaker introduced in the mid-1980s by Jim Thiel and his company Thiel Audio. Designed as part of the company’s “Coherent Source” series, the CS-2 embodied Thiel’s engineering philosophy of time- and phase-accurate sound reproduction. At a time when many loudspeakers focused primarily on power handling or exaggerated bass response, the CS-2 emphasized accuracy, transparency, and imaging precision—qualities that helped establish Thiel as a respected name in high-end audio.

The CS-2 is a three-way floorstanding loudspeaker built around carefully integrated drivers and a rigid, acoustically optimized cabinet. The system uses an 8-inch woofer, a dedicated midrange driver, and a soft-dome tweeter arranged on a distinctive sloped front baffle. This angled design physically aligns the drivers so their acoustic centers reach the listener at nearly the same time, a technique used to improve time coherence and phase accuracy.

This attention to phase alignment was a defining feature of Thiel loudspeakers. Rather than using steep crossover slopes that introduce phase shifts, the CS-2 uses first-order crossover networks that maintain consistent phase relationships between drivers. The result is a seamless transition from bass to midrange and treble, contributing to the speaker’s natural tonal balance and coherent soundstage.

The cabinet construction also plays a key role in the CS-2’s performance. Thick, rigid walls and carefully shaped driver mounting surfaces help reduce unwanted resonance and diffraction effects. According to technical descriptions, the molded front mounting board and heavy cabinet structure contribute to the system’s unusually smooth midrange dispersion and precise imaging.

When first introduced, the CS-2 was positioned as a relatively affordable entry into high-end loudspeakers. Despite the moderate price by audiophile standards, reviewers often commented on the speaker’s performance relative to much more expensive designs.

In a detailed evaluation, Stereophile praised the speaker’s musical realism, noting that “musically, the CS2 is outstanding.” The review also highlighted the system’s seamless integration between drivers, observing that “there is no audible transition between bass and midrange.”

The same review compared the CS-2 favorably to the legendary Quad ESL‑63 Electrostatic Loudspeaker, stating that both were highly transparent and capable of reproducing detail without exaggerating tonal color. While the Quad offered slightly greater resolution, the Thiel provided stronger bass extension and wider high-frequency dispersion.

Another strength frequently noted by listeners is the speaker’s imaging ability. The time-aligned design helps create a stable stereo image with convincing depth and placement of instruments across the soundstage. With careful positioning, the CS-2 can produce a spacious and immersive presentation that was rare among conventional cone speakers of the era.

Although the CS-2 has moderate sensitivity, it benefits from quality amplification capable of delivering stable current into its 6-ohm load. When paired with a good amplifier and properly positioned in a room, the speaker can deliver articulate bass, open midrange detail, and smooth treble extension.

Today, the Thiel CS-2 remains a respected vintage loudspeaker, appreciated by collectors and audiophiles for its precise engineering and balanced sound. It represents an important milestone in the development of time- and phase-coherent loudspeaker design and continues to demonstrate the thoughtful craftsmanship that defined Thiel Audio’s early products.
