The Rega Elicit-R is a high-performance British integrated amplifier introduced in 2013 as the successor to the original Elicit and positioned above the company’s highly successful Brio-R and Elex-R models. Designed around Rega’s philosophy of simplicity, short signal paths and musical engagement, the Elicit-R combines a substantial 105 watts per channel into 8 ohms with an unusually capable analog feature set. It was designed primarily for serious two-channel listening, with no digital inputs, tone controls or headphone amplifier to complicate the signal path.

At its heart is a high-current Class A/B output stage derived from Rega’s earlier amplifier designs. The Elicit-R is capable of delivering more than 160 watts per channel into 4-ohm loads, giving it considerably more authority than its 105-watt rating might suggest. The amplifier uses a substantial power supply and carefully selected discrete circuitry to provide fast transient response, excellent control and the ability to drive a broad range of loudspeakers.

One of the Elicit-R’s most attractive features is its built-in moving-magnet phono stage. Input 1 can operate either as an MM phono input or as a conventional line-level input, selectable from the rear panel. Rega designed the phono circuit with additional noise isolation, making the amplifier particularly attractive to vinyl enthusiasts who want a high-quality analog system without adding a separate phono preamp. The remaining four inputs accommodate CD players, DACs, tuners, streamers and other line-level sources.

Connectivity is otherwise unusually flexible for such a minimalist amplifier. There is a tape loop, preamplifier output, two record outputs and a direct power-amplifier input. The latter allows the Elicit-R’s power section to be used independently, making it possible to integrate the amplifier into a home-theater system or use an external preamplifier. Rega deliberately omitted tone controls and a headphone jack, arguing that these additions were unnecessary compromises to the signal path.

The Elicit-R’s greatest strength, however, is its sound. What Hi-Fi? awarded it five stars and subsequently named it a multiple award winner, praising its “masterclass in detail retrieval and timing.” The review highlighted its superb rhythmic precision, dynamic ability, control and composure. It found that drums had realistic impact and that vocals were particularly expressive, while complex recordings remained organized and intelligible.

The same review cautioned that the Rega can sound somewhat lean or bright compared with warmer competitors. Rather than smoothing over recording imperfections, the Elicit-R tends to expose them. This transparency can be highly rewarding with good recordings and well-matched speakers, but listeners seeking a warm, relaxed presentation may prefer a different amplifier.

A separate review from HiFi and Music Source described the amplifier as “a Class A integrated amplifier with a British Bulldog of a bark”, praising its substantial construction, power and ability to deliver music with immediacy. The reviewer also called it “heavyweight engineering” and emphasized the amplifier’s combination of flexibility and no-frills design.

With its black satin enclosure, distinctive rotary volume/input control, excellent MM phono section and genuinely powerful output stage, the Elicit-R remains one of Rega’s most accomplished analog integrated amplifiers. It is especially compelling for listeners who value timing, transparency, dynamics and a direct connection to the recording.
