The Quad L-ite Subwoofer is a substantial powered subwoofer developed as the low-frequency foundation of Quad’s compact L-ite home-theater speaker system. Introduced in the mid-2000s, it was designed to provide the deep bass and dynamic authority that small satellite speakers cannot produce while retaining the refinement and musicality traditionally associated with the Quad name. Although relatively compact compared with many high-output home-theater subwoofers, the L-ite incorporates a powerful 300-watt RMS amplifier, a 10-inch driver and a sealed enclosure.
The subwoofer uses a 10-inch (250mm) trilaminate composite driver, constructed from carbon fiber sandwiched between layers of bidirectionally woven glass fiber. The rigid, lightweight diaphragm is intended to provide fast response and good control while minimizing unwanted resonances. The driver is mounted in a sealed cabinet, a design choice that favors transient accuracy and controlled low-frequency reproduction rather than the potentially greater output of a ported enclosure.
Quad gave the L-ite an unusually sophisticated control system for its era. The supplied remote allows adjustment of volume, phase and low-pass filtering from the listening position. Six selectable crossover points—35, 45, 55, 65, 75 and 85Hz—make it possible to tailor the subwoofer to different satellite speakers and room conditions. The unit also provides four programmable presets, allowing separate settings for music, movies, late-night listening and other applications. A bypass setting is available when crossover management is handled elsewhere in the system.
The performance received particularly strong praise from contemporary reviewers. What Hi-Fi? called the L-ite “fast, articulate and expressive”, adding that it combined its agile presentation with “genuine weight.” The magazine also praised its ability to handle both music and movies and noted that it remained composed at high volume in a large room.
The Absolute Sound, reviewing the complete L-ite 5.1 system, was similarly enthusiastic about the subwoofer. Reviewer Chris Martens described it as offering “a great combination of power, clarity, and bass that goes very deep,” and called it “one of the best subs I’ve ever heard in a $2k speaker system.” The review specifically credited the L-ite subwoofer with producing deep, clear effects during demanding movie sequences while retaining enough control for musical material.
Sound & Vision was even more emphatic, calling the L-ite “the best sub I’ve yet reviewed in connection with a soundbar” and recommending that listeners consider it as a standalone purchase. Its review highlighted the combination of the 300-watt amplifier, 10-inch composite driver and extensive remote-controlled adjustments.
The published frequency range is 25Hz–95Hz in a boundary position, with a maximum output specification of 108dB at one meter. The sealed cabinet measures approximately 19.1 inches high by 11.3 inches wide by 17.1 inches deep, excluding connectors. At more than 60 pounds in some published specifications, it is considerably more substantial than its compact L-ite satellite companions.
The Quad L-ite remains an interesting vintage subwoofer for listeners who value deep bass, control, musical integration and extensive setup flexibility rather than simply maximum output.
