Description
Introduced in 1977, the Pioneer RT-707 is one of the most recognizable compact open-reel tape machines of the late 1970s. Combining a sophisticated three-motor transport, four-head configuration, playback-only auto-reverse, and excellent published performance specifications, it offered serious recording and playback capabilities in a relatively compact design. Pioneer successfully blended technical innovation with distinctive styling, making the RT-707 a desirable component for vintage hi-fi enthusiasts and reel-to-reel collectors today.
The RT-707 accommodates reels up to seven inches in diameter and uses quarter-inch, four-track, two-channel stereo tape. Its two selectable speeds—3¾ and 7½ inches per second—allow users to balance recording time against fidelity. At the faster speed, the deck’s specified frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 28 kHz, measured at a low recording level, while the rated wow and flutter is an impressive 0.05% WRMS. These specifications made the RT-707 competitive with more expensive consumer open-reel decks of its era.
One of its defining features is its four-head transport. A dedicated erase head and recording head are complemented by separate forward- and reverse-playback heads. This arrangement enables automatic playback reversal without physically turning the tape reels over. Importantly, auto-reverse is a playback feature; recording is performed in the forward direction. The system can also be configured for continuous repeat playback, making the machine useful for extended listening sessions.
Pioneer’s transport engineering is equally impressive. A frequency-generator-controlled AC servo direct-drive capstan motor maintains stable tape speed, while two independent induction motors drive the reel tables. This three-motor design avoids reliance on a conventional belt-driven capstan and contributes to consistent tape motion. Solenoid-operated transport functions and electronic logic switching provide convenient control of play, stop, pause, fast-forward, rewind, and direction changes. A pitch control offers adjustment of approximately ±6%, useful for fine speed correction or creative applications.
Recording facilities include separate left- and right-channel recording-level controls, large illuminated level meters, microphone and line inputs, and the ability to mix microphone and line signals. Selectable bias and equalization settings accommodate different tape formulations. The deck uses NAB equalization and provides conventional analog line-level connections for integration with a preamplifier or amplifier. A timer-activated recording or playback arrangement adds further convenience.
The RT-707’s understated silver faceplate, symmetrical reel layout, and large meters give it a timeless appearance. Its robust 20-kilogram chassis feels substantial, while the compact seven-inch reel format makes it easier to accommodate than many professional machines designed for ten-inch reels. One frequently noted ergonomic compromise is that the playback output-level controls are located on the rear panel rather than the front.
The RT-707 can deliver detailed, stable playback and high-quality recordings. Its strengths are the reliable direct-drive transport, versatile playback facilities, and strong performance at 7½ ips.
Review quotes and owner impressions
“It’s THE quarter track machine to own, along with the 909.”
— Owner review published on HiFi Engine, October 2016.
“it has a fantastic sound”
— Owner review on HiFi Engine, June 2021, discussing a restored RT-707.
A historical Hi-Fi Stereo Review laboratory test also found excellent frequency-response performance at 7½ ips, measuring a response within ±2 dB from 20 Hz to 24.5 kHz at a low recorded signal level. This provides a useful independent technical perspective on the deck’s original capabilities.
