Description
The Hovland HP-100 is a high-end, all-tube stereo preamplifier that combines a minimalist circuit philosophy with an unusually luxurious level of construction. Introduced around 2000, it was Hovland’s first major electronics product and quickly attracted attention for its distinctive combination of tube liquidity, transparency, dynamics, and unusually natural spatial presentation. Available as a line stage, the HP-100 was designed as a serious centerpiece for both digital and analog-oriented high-end systems.
Visually, the HP-100 is unmistakable. Its thick black-nickel-plated aluminum faceplate, blue backlighting, and three substantial chrome-plated controls give it a restrained but unmistakably upscale appearance. Operation is deliberately tactile: the volume control uses a 31-position, 2dB-step attenuator with silver contacts, while the input selector is also mechanically precise. There is no remote control, but the unit provides eight inputs, a tape loop, two sets of main outputs, mute and mono functions, and a ±5dB balance control.
Under the hood, Hovland pursued simplicity rather than circuit complexity. The line stage employs two 12AX7 tubes and one 12AT7 according to the published specifications. The power supply is solid-state, with custom capacitors and a large-core transformer positioned away from the high-gain circuitry. Hovland also used its own MusiCap capacitors, along with premium resistors and shielded internal wiring.
The HP-100’s greatest strength is its sound. In his Stereophile review, Michael Fremer praised its “natural attack and decay” and described it as delivering an unusually strong sense of being present at a live performance. He found it exceptionally clear and extended without becoming clinical, combining transparency with harmonic richness, texture, and spatial depth. Fremer ultimately called the review “a love fest” and concluded that the HP-100 had given him the greatest musical pleasure he had experienced from a preamplifier at that point.
Another enthusiast review similarly praised the Hovland for its body, texture, smooth midrange, and natural tonal character, describing it as particularly compelling for conveying the feeling of live music.
There are qualifications. Stereophile noted relatively high output impedance and recommended pairing it with power amplifiers having a suitably high input impedance. The HP-100 remains notable for a presentation that is refined and romantic without falling into the stereotypical soft, overly warm “tube” sound.

Overall, the Hovland HP-100 is best understood as a high-end tube preamplifier built around musical involvement rather than sterile technical perfection. Its combination of exceptional build quality, flexible connectivity, and an unusually liquid yet detailed presentation made it one of the more memorable high-end preamps of its era.
