HiFi Rose RS201E Integrated Amp

Description

The HiFi Rose RS201E is an unusually ambitious all-in-one digital audio component that combines a network streamer, DAC, integrated amplifier, preamplifier, headphone amplifier and video-capable media player in a compact chassis. Introduced as one of HiFi Rose’s early products, the RS201E takes a very different approach to the conventional streaming amplifier, placing an 8.8-inch full-color touchscreen across most of its front panel. The result is a component designed to be operated as much like a tablet as a traditional piece of hi-fi equipment. HiFi Rose subsequently discontinued the RS201E in March 2025.

The touchscreen is arguably the RS201E’s defining feature. Album artwork, music information, VU meters and control menus can all be displayed directly on the unit, eliminating the need to reach for a phone or tablet for many everyday functions. What Hi-Fi? called the system “an attractively unique and versatile streaming system”, while particularly praising its tactile, interactive nature.

The RS201E runs Rose’s software on an Android 7.0 platform and supports a broad range of music sources and formats. Network connectivity is provided through Ethernet or Wi-Fi, while AirPlay and DLNA provide additional streaming options. Services supported during its product life included Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify and Rose’s own streaming and media applications. It can handle PCM material up to 32-bit/384kHz and native DSD up to DSD256 (11.2MHz). MQA decoding is also supported.

Digital and physical connectivity is unusually comprehensive. The RS201E provides USB-A and USB-C connectivity, optical and coaxial digital connections, RCA analog inputs and outputs, HDMI video output and a 3.5mm headphone jack. There is also a microSD slot supporting cards up to 512GB. Optional CD playback and ripping is possible with HiFi Rose’s RSA780 USB CD drive, with internal storage available for locally stored music.

Its integrated amplifier uses HiFi Rose’s Pure Path Ultra HD power-amplifier architecture. Published specifications rate it at 100 watts per channel, while HiFi Rose’s US documentation specifies 50 watts per channel into 4 ohms. The substantial power available from such a small chassis makes the RS201E capable of driving a surprisingly broad range of loudspeakers, although several reviewers point out that speaker sensitivity and impedance remain important considerations.

The sound has generated somewhat different impressions among reviewers. AVForums described the RS201E as having a “neutral yet engaging performance” and praised its combination of speed, bass depth, smooth treble and substantial power. Its reviewer found the unit capable of producing a large, refined sound while also handling television audio effectively.

What Hi-Fi? found its presentation “tonally even and plenty clear through the frequencies,” while noting that competing products delivered greater rhythmic precision and detail resolution. Hi-Fi Choice, meanwhile, praised the balance between “energy and refinement” and found the integrated amplifier worked particularly well with a revealing pair of Focal loudspeakers.

The RS201E’s appeal ultimately lies in its extraordinary combination of functions. It can serve as the heart of a minimalist stereo system with only a pair of speakers, yet also function as a high-resolution streaming source, digital hub, headphone amplifier and video player. Its touchscreen and extensive media capabilities distinguish it from conventional streaming amplifiers, while its compact dimensions make it particularly attractive for systems where space is limited.
