Description
The Harman Kardon Citation II is a classic vintage stereo tube amplifier introduced in the late 1950s as part of the brand’s prestigious Citation line. Though frequently referenced alongside preamps, the Citation II itself is a tube power amplifier designed to drive loudspeakers with rich, dynamic sound and broad frequency extension — a significant achievement for its era and still appreciated by collectors and audiophiles today.
Designed by legendary engineer Stu Hegeman, the Citation II utilized an advanced high-gain, wide-bandwidth video-pentode circuit — uncommon in high-fidelity audio gear at the time — to achieve exceptionally clean, wide-range amplification. Review and restoration notes describe its sound as having “performance that was difficult to believe” and emphasize the amplifier’s **spectacular soundstaging, life, and breadth of image depth.”
The core of the Citation II’s design was its use of video output pentodes in low-level stages, followed by pairs of KT88 (or 6550) output tubes per channel in a conservatively biased distributed load circuit. The extra-wide bandwidth from the video pentode sections allowed the amp to deliver frequency response and linearity well ahead of many contemporaries. Three feedback loops contributed around 30–32 dB of global feedback, helping to reduce distortion without sacrificing stability — an advanced approach for its time.
Although primarily a power amplifier, the Citation II was often paired with Citation preamplifiers (such as the original Citation I control center) for full stereo systems. In many vintage audio circles, the Citation II is cited as one of the most influential tube amplifiers ever made, rivaling even legendary models like the McIntosh MC275. Restorers note that “the sound easily rivals a McIntosh MC275 — some even prefer it,” reflecting its enduring musical appeal.
Collectors also admire the Citation II for its robust build quality and serviceability — many examples undergo thorough restorations where capacitors, tubes, and other aging parts are refreshed to bring the amplifier back to peak performance. Despite its age, examples that are maintained or restored continue to be prized by audiophiles who appreciate the classic tube sound signature: warm yet detailed, powerful yet controlled.
The consensus among vintage audio aficionados is that when properly serviced, it remains a hallmark of classic high-fidelity tube amplification.
