Description

The Fanfare FT‑1 FM Tuner is a high-end analog FM tuner introduced in the early 1990s by Fanfare Electronics, a boutique manufacturer founded by former Magnum Dynalab engineer Marv Sacks. Designed during a period when audiophile-grade FM reception still held an important place in serious audio systems, the FT-1 quickly earned a reputation for combining outstanding radio-frequency (RF) performance with musical sound quality and excellent ergonomics. With its analog tuning architecture, balanced outputs, and full-function remote control, the FT-1 was built specifically for listeners who valued the fidelity of FM broadcasts and demanded the same performance standards from their tuner as they did from their amplifiers and speakers.

Unlike many digital-synthesized tuners of the era, the FT-1 uses a true analog front-end design built around high-quality varactor tuning devices and MOSFET RF amplification stages. This approach was chosen for its sonic transparency and ability to extract weak signals while maintaining low distortion and excellent stereo separation. Hand-selected ceramic filters in the intermediate-frequency stage ensure accurate group-delay characteristics, helping preserve phase coherence and soundstage accuracy. The result is a tuner capable of delivering surprisingly refined audio performance from well-broadcast FM stations.

To maintain precise tuning stability, Fanfare incorporated a proprietary monitoring system known as UNISET, a microprocessor-based circuit that continuously checks the tuned frequency and corrects any drift. This design combines the sonic benefits of analog circuitry with the accuracy typically associated with digital tuners. The FT-1 also supports tuning in precise 50 kHz increments and includes automatic seek functions, making it easy to scan for stations while retaining precise manual control.

The tuner is notable for its impressive connectivity and output flexibility. In addition to standard RCA outputs, the FT-1 provides balanced XLR outputs, a feature typically reserved for much more expensive broadcast or audiophile tuners. Two sets of unbalanced outputs—high-level and low-level—allow users to choose between a conventional line-level signal or a direct low-impedance output from the multiplex filter stage. A composite output is also included for broadcast monitoring or external signal processing.

From an ergonomic standpoint, the FT-1 was ahead of its time. It features an infrared remote control that duplicates all front-panel functions, including station presets, tuning, bandwidth switching, and DX/local reception modes. The clear fluorescent display and silent push-button controls make operation easy from across the listening room, reinforcing the component’s role as a serious but user-friendly audiophile device.

Critical reception for the FT-1 was exceptionally positive. In a review for Stereophile, Steven Stone praised the tuner’s value and performance, writing:

“The Fanfare FT-1 deserves not only Class A status, but the bargain ‘$$$’ as well.”

Another reviewer compared its performance favorably with far more expensive reference tuners, noting that its station-pulling ability rivaled models costing several times more.

Today, the Fanfare FT-1 remains a respected component among vintage audio enthusiasts and FM broadcast aficionados. Its combination of sensitive RF performance, analog sound quality, and thoughtful features make it one of the standout FM tuners of the 1990s. For listeners who still appreciate the unique character of over-the-air FM broadcasting, the FT-1 represents a refined and capable solution that continues to hold its place in high-end audio systems.
