Description

The Energy Connoisseur C-9 was the flagship floorstanding model in Energy’s highly regarded Connoisseur series, designed to deliver the kind of full-range performance normally associated with substantially larger and more expensive loudspeakers. Introduced in the early 2000s, the Canadian-made C-9 combined a relatively narrow cabinet with three 6.5-inch drivers and a chambered aluminum-dome tweeter, producing impressive bass extension while maintaining a smooth, refined overall balance. Factory specifications list a 31Hz–23kHz frequency response, 91dB sensitivity, and power handling up to 250 watts per channel.

The C-9 employs a three-way/four-driver architecture, with two 6.5-inch homopolymer woofers, a third 6.5-inch mid/bass driver, and a 1-inch chambered aluminum-dome tweeter. Its tapered bass-reflex enclosure is vented both front and rear. This arrangement allows the relatively slim 7.75-inch-wide cabinet to produce remarkably substantial low frequencies. Energy’s Connoisseur design philosophy emphasized controlled dispersion and smooth integration between drivers, with the company’s Convergent Source approach placing the mid/woofer and tweeter close together to reduce interference and improve off-axis consistency.

Listening impressions of the C-9 have generally emphasized its unusually deep and controlled bass, smooth treble, and non-fatiguing tonal character. One detailed contemporary review described the bass as “deep, clean well articulated” and praised the tweeter as “crystalline and airy without being prominent or etched.” The same reviewer characterized the overall presentation as remarkably neutral and cohesive, comparing its tonal character favorably with the classic Acoustic Research AR9Lsi.

The C-9’s presentation tends toward the smooth and slightly laid-back rather than aggressively forward. That characteristic can make the speaker less immediately spectacular in a quick showroom audition, but it becomes an advantage during extended listening. A contemporary owner/reviewer called the speaker “alluring,” noting that its combination of tonal balance, articulation and ease encouraged repeated listening. Another enthusiast described the C-9s as producing a “very warm soundstage without being overly bright.”

Despite their high 91–94dB sensitivity ratings in published specifications, the C-9 benefits from a capable amplifier, particularly at high listening levels. One experienced reviewer recommended roughly 200 watts per channel, explaining that the speakers seemed to thrive when driven hard.

The cabinets stand roughly 43–45 inches tall and weigh approximately 62 pounds each, making the C-9 substantial speakers despite their narrow front profile. Magnetic grilles, substantial binding posts, stabilizing feet and floor spikes were included.

Today, the C-9 remains an interesting choice on the used market for listeners seeking a smooth, full-range floorstander. Its combination of deep bass, excellent sensitivity, sophisticated driver integration and refined treble gives it performance that can still compete with many newer speakers—particularly when paired with quality amplification and given adequate room to breathe.
