Description

The Cambridge SoundWorks Ensemble Speaker System is one of the most influential compact speaker systems of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Designed by legendary audio engineer Henry Kloss, the Ensemble was created to deliver full-range, high-fidelity sound from a surprisingly small footprint. By combining small satellite speakers with separate bass modules, the system offered impressive performance at an affordable price, becoming a popular alternative to larger bookshelf speakers and competing compact systems.

The Ensemble was introduced by Cambridge SoundWorks, a company Kloss co-founded in 1988 with Tom DeVesto. The brand adopted a direct-to-consumer sales model, allowing it to sell high-quality audio equipment without the markup associated with traditional retail distribution. This approach helped keep the price of the Ensemble system relatively low—around $499 for the complete four-piece system—while maintaining strong build quality and engineering.

The system’s design is unusual but highly effective. Instead of placing all the drivers in one cabinet, the Ensemble separates the sound spectrum into two components: compact satellite speakers for midrange and high frequencies, and dedicated bass modules for low frequencies. The two bass modules each contain an 8-inch acoustic-suspension woofer in a sealed enclosure. These modules can be placed on the floor near walls or furniture to reinforce low-frequency output while remaining visually unobtrusive.

The small satellites house a 4-inch midrange driver and a 1¾-inch tweeter, delivering clear mids and detailed highs. The crossover network integrates the satellites with the bass modules at around 140 Hz, allowing the small speakers to operate efficiently while the bass modules handle deeper frequencies.

One of the most distinctive features of the Ensemble system is the use of two separate bass modules rather than a single subwoofer. This design helps distribute bass more evenly throughout the listening space and improves stereo imaging. The modules can be placed independently, reducing the chance of localized bass and helping the system blend naturally into the room’s acoustics.

Despite its compact size, the Ensemble earned strong praise from reviewers for its balanced tonal response and musical presentation. Laboratory measurements showed a surprisingly smooth response from approximately 50 Hz to 20 kHz within about ±3 dB, an impressive result for such a small speaker system.

Reviewers also noted that the system delivered sound quality far beyond what its size and price suggested. One evaluation concluded:

“An exceptionally effective execution of the basic concept.”

Another review praised its musicality, stating:

“They were designed to play music—and to make it sound like music.”

The Ensemble system is best paired with amplifiers in the 25- to 100-watt-per-channel range, though it can handle higher power without damage when used responsibly. While its sensitivity is somewhat low compared with larger speakers, the design prioritizes accuracy and tonal balance rather than sheer volume.

Today, the Cambridge SoundWorks Ensemble remains a respected classic among vintage audio enthusiasts. Its thoughtful engineering, compact design, and excellent value helped establish the company’s reputation and introduced many listeners to high-quality sound in a small, affordable package.
